Fury makes Community donation
Southborough recently had their new 911 Memorial Field completed and ready for the community. It is a great facility with a state of the Art Nike Turf surface. Southborough’s Pop Warner program was set to start up this past week, but were in need of goal post pads. So, this week, the Central Mass Fury Football program stepped up and was able to donate the $600 to purchase the necessary equipment for the City of Southborough.
“This is what it is all about, making an impact in the community, no matter how big or small, the fact that we can make a difference means the world to me and this is just the beginning for us”, stated Mass Fury Owner/President Chris Chambers.
Saturday September 30th, the Central Mass Fury will host the Northeast Knights at Southborough’s 911 Memorial Field at 3pm.
Fury inaugurate season with win
Central Mass. shuts out Gamblers
NORTHEAST INDEPENDENT FOOTBALL LEAGUE
By Steve Brown TELEGRAM & GAZETTE STAFF
WORCESTER— Chris Chambers wasn’t sure what to expect from his team in its Northeast Independent Football League debut yesterday at Foley Stadium.
Not only was it the first game of the season for the Central Mass. Fury, but it was the opening weekend of the inaugural season for the NIFL, a league Chambers helped created this past year.
The Fury was featuring a first-year quarterback in David Anthony and their opponent was the Exeter Gamblers, the defending champions of the NAFL3. Chambers had a feeling, however, that his team was ready.
“They were getting testy in practice,” a smiling Chambers said after the game.
“They’ve been practicing against each other since April, so they were getting antsy to play a game.”
The Fury, with 40 players on their roster, certainly looked ready, as they came out with a ton of energy and parlayed it into a resounding 33-0 victory, setting the tone for what they hope will be a very successful inaugural season.
“I was confident, but this was even better than I expected,” Chambers said.
After Kevin Leblanc of Millbury took back the opening kickoff 45 yards to give the Fury great field position at the Exeter 30, the Fury offense turned the ball over on downs. No worries there, however.
Chambers considers his defense to be the strong point of the team right now, and it didn’t take long for the defense to make their presence felt as Jim Weagle and Kevin Schofield flushed quarterback Mike Hawkins out of the pocket on fourth down and sacked him for a big loss.
Hawkins was injured on the play and didn’t return.
Craig Derrell and Joe Okrah also made key defensive plays on the first drive.
Ricardo Navedo got the Fury offense going on their second drive, breaking loose a 33-yard run before punching it in from two yards out midway through the quarter, with Rob Beauregard (3 for 5 on PATs) adding the extra point.
The defenses traded blows for awhile until Okrah dealt the Gamblers a devastating blow when he took a short punt 55 yards for a score to make it 13-0 with 1:40 left in the half.
The touchdown invigorated the Fury, who made a defensive stand and got the ball back with less than a minute left. Two plays later, Anthony found Chipper Boutiette in the back of the end zone for a 35-yard touchdown, the first of two TDs for Boutiette.
Boutiette also caught a five-yard TD pass from Anthony with 5:50 left in the third, with the PAT giving the Fury a 26-0 lead.
Anthony added a two-yard TD on a quarterback sneak in the fourth quarter to finish off the scoring.
Sean Suslowicz, Craig Derrell and Kevin Leblanc all had interceptions, with Leblanc’s coming in the end zone to put a stop to Exeter’s best drive.
All in all, it was an outstanding all-around effort by Chambers’ squad in its first effort of the season.
Next Saturday, the Fury Travel to Applejack Field in Manchester, Vermont to take on the Southern Vermont Storm. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
